Music Marketing #1

The Music Video Project begins with the first section, the Music Marketing Research. Before we began compiling our research, we closely listened to all three assigned songs and ultimately decided on the best one. We had been assigned R&B and began our research chart. We chose two separate music companies, Atlantic Records and Universal Music Group, which each comprised of several renowned artists. From the artists we chose, most of them had their own websites to promote not only music, but also their merchandise and tours. All of them used social media.

We ultimately used mostly Instagram to conduct research, since it tends to be a common hub of activity for R&B singers (and many other genres). Finding information on all of these artists was challenging, since most websites and articles were outdated. Through instagram (and twitter), all of our singers were more up to date with their events and promotions. Not only that, but posts on this platform tend to be important and garner the most attention out of almost every other social media platform. As a result, we could use the older posts as a reference to their important tours, merchandise updates, and album/song releases, among other marketing strategies, such as personalization and vulnerability (Jhene Aiko's pregnancy). The posts being organized by not relevancy but by date proved to be of higher efficiency, unlike google searches.

Since R&B is a genre leaning more towards the abstract and artistic side, our song was unique. We felt challenged to think of a video to make on the song. The next steps are to make the storyboard, and we have scheduled a group call on Thursday to digitally make our storyboard. While the entire group pitches in ideas, Clover and Zach will be the main artists in an online website created for storyboarding, as they are more artistically talented. Moving forward, we plan to record the music video on Friday, the day after we finish the storyboard.
